More than 32,000 feet per minute. What does that descent rate actually mean? Flightradar24 reports that the Learjet’s transmitted vertical rate exceeded 32,000 feet per minute during its final descent. For scale, that equals approximately 533 feet per second vertically. This conversion describes the reported rate. It does not establish impact speed or mean the aircraft maintained that rate throughout the descent. CNN separately reported that tracking from ADS B Exchange showed an altitude loss of approximately 27,000 feet in one minute before the data stopped. That is just over five miles vertically. These figures measure different things: a vertical rate during the descent and an altitude change over a period of time. Flightradar24’s last received altitude was 8,750 feet. That marks the end of its available altitude record, not the point of impact. Its account also describes a steep descent turning to the right. The aircraft subsequently struck near a busy roadway and homes in Palm Beach County. Initial official statements reported no injuries or deaths on the ground. The figures convey how rapidly the emergency developed. They cannot establish what initiated it, whether a component failed or which options remained available to the crew. That distinction matters: describing an aircraft’s movement is one step toward understanding an accident. Explaining its cause requires more evidence. Part 3 examines four explanations circulating online, and what supports them. Recreated in clay by CERAMICO. The depicted flight path is illustrative and not to scale. Tracking figures are attributed to their providers; they are not an NTSB reconstruction.
