@rebeccabarrmd: 💊 Regular Multivitamins vs. Bariatric Vitamins: What's the Difference? Can you take a regular One A Day multivitamin after bariatric surgery, or do you actually need bariatric-specific vitamins? 👀 The answer depends on the type of surgery you've had! After bariatric surgery, your body may absorb fewer nutrients, which means your vitamin and mineral requirements can be significantly higher than those of the general population. Here's what you need to know: 🔹 Gastric Sleeve: Typically requires 45–60 mg of iron, 350–500 mcg of B12, and around 3,000 IU of vitamin D. 🔹 Gastric Bypass: Similar requirements, but nutrient absorption becomes an even bigger concern. Calcium needs are around 1,200–1,500 mg daily. 🔹 Duodenal Switch & SADI: Often require even higher supplementation, particularly for fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with 1,800–2,400 mg of calcium daily. ⚠️ The important thing to remember is that your vitamin requirements are lifelong. A regular multivitamin alone generally isn't enough, although additional supplements may help meet your needs. 🩺 Regular blood work is essential to make sure you're getting the nutrients your body needs. My doctor put me on a prenatal vitamin along with a vitamin d supplement for 12 weeks. Yeah I purchased the bariatric vitamins and she allowed me to take them first then switch over.

I spoke with my surgeon and showed him the label of the vitamins I can afford (small fixed income disability) and he said they were perfectly fine. I am 26 years post bypass and 3 years revision to SADI and my levels have been perfect aside from a EXTREMELY high Vit D

Bariatric vitamins made me so ill. I ended up getting approval from my surgeon for a standard multivitamin. My bloodwork has always been fine.

My clinic doesn't offer a Multivitamin without Iron. I need to look for one, any suggestions? Right now I am taking a high quality Multivitamin. But like you said, it may not be enough. (I have too much iron, and do phlebotomy's twice a month)

I’m not saying you’re wrong. My surgeon told me i can take 2 basic multivitamins for bypass. He’s been doing it over 20 years, and his patients have been doing great! - i was prepared to buy the bariatric specific ones

@Dr. Rebecca Barr I have a question, is it okay to be taking bariatric vitamins with the extra iron long term? Will we ever need a lower iron vitamin or will we forever need the extra iron? 💜
