Imagine moving out to the absolute middle of nowhere in the Texas Panhandle in the late 1870s. It’s quiet, it’s vast, and unfortunately, it's the backdrop for one of the most heartbreaking ecological disasters in American history: the near-extinction of the American bison. While the hide hunters were out there systematically wiping out the massive herds, Mary Ann "Molly" Goodnight was sitting on the porch of the JA Ranch, listening to the echoes of gunfire. And she absolutely couldn't stand it. Every now and then, after the hunters rolled through, orphaned bison calves would wander onto the ranch. They were terrified, starving, and crying out for their mothers—a sound that allegedly broke Molly’s heart. She looked at her husband, the legendary cattleman Charles Goodnight, and essentially said, "We are not letting them die." Here is how Molly took matters into her own hands: • The Cowboy Roundup: She talked Charles and his cowboys into roping the abandoned calves and bringing them back to the ranch house. • The Ultimate Nurse: Bison calves are not gentle creatures, but Molly became their surrogate mother. She spent her days bottle-feeding them a mix of milk and cornmeal, patiently nursing the wild, fragile animals back to health. • The Sanctuary: She gave them a safe haven, letting them graze on the ranch protected from hunters. What started as a handful of orphaned calves grew into the famous Goodnight Herd. Because of Molly's stubborn refusal to look the other way, she managed to preserve the last remaining genetically pure Southern Plains bison. Fast forward to today: if you ever visit Caprock Canyons State Park, you can see the direct descendants of Molly's bottle-fed calves roaming the plains as the official Texas State Bison Herd. If it wasn't for a determined woman with a bottle of milk and a refusal to back down, this entire branch of American bison history would have been completely wiped out. #Bison #Conservation #Goodnight #vote
