His grieving father said Javits had complained about bullying. Whether that bullying was connected to his death remains under investigation. But listening to his father’s pain broke my heart. 😭 As Mohammed’s mum, I immediately thought about my own son. My son is autistic and is still developing his speech. He cannot even express what happened during his day, who hurt his feelings, or why he suddenly feels afraid. What if someone threatens him? What if someone hurts him? What if he comes home distressed, and I cannot immediately understand why? A child’s difficulty telling us what happened must never make it easier for someone to hurt them. This is why I advocate loudly. This is why I ask questions. This is why I need the adults around my son to listen, pay attention and take concerns seriously. Schools must act on bullying reports, support different ways of communicating, and protect children before a situation becomes a tragedy. And parents, our responsibility begins at home. Teach your children that someone who speaks, learns or behaves differently deserves the same kindness and respect they do. ❤️ 🗣️ To parents of nonspeaking children or children with limited speech: what helped you recognize that something was wrong?
