@predictthevote: In Michigan’s 7th District, I currently give Tom Barrett a very slight advantage. Barrett flipped this seat in 2024, defeating Curtis Hertel by about 3.7 percentage points, while Trump carried the district by roughly 1.3 points. Those results show how competitive it is, although Barrett’s ability to outperform Trump gives him something to build on as the incumbent. (ballotpedia.org) However, the biggest reason I have Republicans holding this seat is William Lawrence winning the Democratic nomination. Lawrence is a more progressive candidate with an activist background, and while I think that could help him appeal to progressive Democrats, I’m less convinced it will translate to the moderate voters needed to win this district. In a race this close, I think the nominee can make a real difference. This district previously elected Elissa Slotkin, whose more moderate and pragmatic image is closer to what I think works here for Democrats. Had Bridget Brink or Matt Maasdam won the nomination, I would probably have this seat flipping, especially in the Democratic environment I’m expecting this year. That doesn’t mean Lawrence can’t win, but I think his political profile gives Barrett a better opportunity to hold on. Ultimately, I expect the national environment to make this closer than Barrett’s 2024 victory, but I think incumbency and the Democratic nomination will barely be enough to keep him ahead. This is very much a coin flip, and I could easily see Lawrence winning if Democrats have a particularly strong night.
