Sometimes before you even got out of bed, sometimes in the grocery store, sometimes for no reason anyone else could understand. And then one day, you realize it's been a while. Maybe a few days. Maybe a week. You still miss them. You still think about them. But the tears haven't come the way they used to. And instead of feeling relieved, something inside you gets uncomfortable. Why am I not crying? Am I getting over them? Am I starting to forget? Because for so long, the intensity of your pain felt connected to the depth of your love. And when that pain begins to change, you may wonder what it means. But your grief doesn't have to remain as intense as it was in the beginning to prove that your love is still there. You don't have to keep hurting at the same level to stay connected. You don't have to feel guilty for having an easier day. And you don't have to make yourself sad just because you notice you're feeling okay. Sometimes grief is quieter. Sometimes it's loud again tomorrow. Neither one measures how much someone mattered.
