@moviesheavenupdates: Robin Williams agreed to get the scripted “Mrs. Doubtfire” takes first. Then he would turn to director Chris Columbus and say, “Let me play.” That meant another 15 to 22 takes with new lines each time. Columbus used four cameras to catch the other actors’ reactions, sometimes shooting until the film ran out. They shot nearly 2 million feet of film, roughly nine times a typical 20:1 ratio. Columbus later counted 972 boxes of footage, including outtakes and behind-the-scenes material. Even the script supervisor couldn’t catch every line. Some improv was so adult that Columbus confirmed enough for an R-rated cut; the NC-17 rumor was a joke. “Mrs. Doubtfire” went on to earn $441M worldwide, finishing 1993 behind only “Jurassic Park” at the box office.
