Why your core is working even when you're not doing ab exercises🤎 One of the biggest misconceptions I hear about Pilates is that you only work your core when you're doing abdominal exercises. But your core is doing so much more than you might realise! Whether you're performing footwork, lunges, arm exercises or standing work on the reformer, your core muscles are constantly playing a role in supporting and controlling your movements. But why is this? Your core isn't just your six-pack muscles. It's a group of muscles that work together to support your spine, stabilise your pelvis and help transfer force between your upper and lower body. This includes your transverse abdominis, obliques, rectus abdominis, diaphragm, pelvic floor and deeper spinal muscles. So how is your core working during other Pilates exercises? ✨ During footwork – Your abdominal and trunk muscles help maintain your pelvic and spinal positioning as your legs push against the resistance of the springs. ✨ During lunges – Your core works to control your trunk and pelvis, helping you maintain balance and stability as your legs move. ✨ During upper-body exercises – Your core helps resist unwanted movement through your spine and ribcage as your arms pull or push against resistance. ✨ During single-leg exercises – Your trunk muscles help control rotation and side-to-side movement, particularly when your base of support is reduced. ✨ During standing exercises – Your core works alongside your hips and legs to help maintain posture, balance and control. So does this mean you need to constantly squeeze your abs? Absolutely not! Your core muscles naturally respond to the demands of movement. The goal isn't to constantly brace, suck your stomach in or hold unnecessary tension. Instead, focus on maintaining control, coordinating your breathing and allowing your muscles to work together. And here's something important to remember... Just because you don't feel your abs burning doesn't mean your core isn't working. Core strength isn't only about crunches, planks or how long you can hold a position. It's also about your ability to stabilise, resist movement and control your body through different exercises. Your core doesn't switch off just because you're not doing an ab exercise. 🤍 And that's one of the things I love most about Pilates. You're often challenging multiple muscle groups at once, even when you don't realise it! #reformerpilates #reformerpilatesworkout #pilatesinstructor #pilatesworkout #pilatesinspiration
