Whether his father was present in his life or not when his mother died, one fact remains: Toluwa’s father is his biological parent, and Toluwa belongs to both his mother and father, not exclusively to his maternal family. Yes, his maternal family may have taken responsibility for raising him, caring for him, and giving him a home, and that deserves recognition. However, raising a child does not erase the child’s biological family ties or automatically transfer parental rights. The truth is that if Toluwa’s father had not agreed to let his maternal family raise him, they could not simply have taken that responsibility upon themselves without his consent. Therefore, I see his father’s decision to allow his late wife’s family to raise Toluwa as an act of kindness, compassion, and consideration. It was arguably a way of allowing his late wife’s family to maintain a close relationship with the child and find some comfort after losing their beloved daughter. We should acknowledge and appreciate the maternal family’s role in raising him without disregarding his father’s place in his life and family.
