@ksbw_8: Maya Cinemas’ planned Halloween reopening in downtown Salinas is no longer expected to happen. Salinas City Councilmember Margaret D’Arrigo said officials are hoping to reopen the theater by Nov. 6 and expect to share more details next week. The theater had initially been scheduled to reopen Oct. 9, after the city announced a partnership with Maya Cinemas and the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce. Maya Cinemas pushed back that date, saying it needed more time to ensure the reopening went smoothly. D’Arrigo previously told KSBW 8 that the theater was planning a soft reopening on Halloween, followed by a full reopening the next week. When the reopening was first announced, officials also promised special events, including public and private meetings and conferences, as well as more Spanish-language movies. It is unclear how those plans are progressing. Maya Cinemas also issued a separate Oct. 19 press release about its Bakersfield theater. The company said Maya Bakersfield 16 & MPX remained open and operating normally after its operating company and an affiliate filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The release said the filing would not close the theater and that tickets, gift cards, and rewards would continue to be honored. The release addressed the Bakersfield location, not the Salinas reopening. There is no known impact from the bankruptcy filing for the Salinas location.
