8mo is crazy! Like fast! We have been asked to adopt 2x in 3.5yrs of fostering. Half way through the first, he was taken to a new foster. This can happen! It was very traumatic for us and him. We had him from birth! He left us at almost 2yo. Just shedding light on the other processes of this from long term fosters. Also there have been some we agreed long term for but would not adopt. There’s a lot to it for all families, people, and kids involved.

My wife and I just got placement of two girls and reunification is not beneficial or possible, so we are hopefully going to be adopting them if all goes well!!!!

I think more people need to see this as an option , but keeping an open mind like yourselves as to what the outcome is. Cause while every kid deserves a home, it’s not always affordable for a family to spend $$$ to jump to adoption. These kids need families and if it’s meant to be it could be a beautiful story.

I’m glad that you’re putting this out there, but it is truly an oversimplification. You’re very lucky that you were able to achieve permanent custody. There are however many, many children in the US foster care system that need forever homes. I hope your message makes its way to the right people.

This is beautiful! Congratulations! I think it’s helpful to note that there is cost for some families going this route - especially adopting older kids as you often miss work for appointments and school concerns, and not everyone’s insurance will cover the medical appointment 100% plus I know we spent a lot of money getting our home ready for kids, BUT, it is soooo much more affordable than domestic adoption and you have tools and connections to help with navigating the trauma inherent in all foster care and adoption- whereas with domestic infant adoption people often assume the baby doesn’t carry any trauma- but it’s there and agency resources are so helpful! (We are adopting our 15 year old, so it’s been a bit of a different process!)
