@nourishingapothecary: Colostrum is everywhere at the moment. But what makes it different from regular milk, and who might actually benefit? Colostrum is the first milk produced after birth. The supplements you see contain bovine colostrum, collected from cows after calving. What makes it interesting is the combination of immunoglobulins, including IgG antibodies, lactoferrin and growth factors. These compounds have roles in immune defence and the gut environment. Lactoferrin, for example, binds iron, which is also a nutrient certain microbes need to grow. One area researchers have explored is intestinal permeability during intense exercise. Your gut lining acts as a selective barrier. During prolonged, strenuous exercise, particularly in the heat, reduced blood flow to the gut and rising body temperature can put that barrier under stress. Some small trials have found that colostrum reduces the exercise-related increase in permeability, although results haven’t been consistent across studies. There’s also research showing fewer upper respiratory illness episodes in physically active adults taking colostrum. That’s why I find it interesting for gut and immune support. The important question is whether the research fits the person, the product and the dose we’re considering. The Chief Colostrum I’m showing is available through Nourishing Apothecary. It’s easy to mix into yoghurt or a smoothie. It contains cow’s milk proteins, so it isn’t suitable for someone with a cow’s milk allergy or anyone following a vegan diet. Save this if you’ve been wondering what colostrum actually is. #Colostrum #GutHealth #BovineColostrum #ImmuneHealth #NourishingApothecary
