Your teenager lied. Broke a rule. Failed a class. Made a decision you warned them not to make. And your first instinct might be to lecture, punish, or tighten control. But here's something I want parents to consider: **Are you teaching your teen how to make better decisions, or just how to avoid getting caught?** Teenagers are still developing the executive functioning skills needed for impulse control, planning, and thinking through consequences. Punishment alone doesn't necessarily teach those skills. Think about a great coach. When an athlete makes a mistake, the coach doesn't simply yell at them. They help them understand what went wrong and practice doing it differently. Try asking: "What led you to make that decision?" "What were you hoping would happen?" "What could you do differently next time?" This doesn't mean removing accountability. It means making accountability an opportunity for growth. **Your job isn't to control every decision your teenager makes. It's to develop the judgment they'll need when you're no longer standing beside them.** #ParentingTeens #TeenDiscipline #AuthoritativeParenting #ParentingMistakes #TeenBehavior
