Trevaline Evans Disappearance Trevaline Evans (born 6 September 1937) was a 52-year-old antiques dealer from Llangollen, Denbighshire, North Wales. She vanished without trace on 16 June 1990 and remains missing more than 36 years later. Background She had lived in Llangollen her entire life. Married to Richard Evans for around 30 years, they had one son (also Richard), who later became a police sergeant and died of a heart attack in 1999. In the week of her disappearance she returned alone to Llangollen on Wednesday 13 June while Richard stayed to continue the work. Sightings of the Mystery Man In the days leading up to 16 June, witnesses repeatedly saw Trevaline with a smartly dressed, grey-haired or distinguished-looking man in a navy suit or blazer, sometimes carrying a black briefcase. On Thursday 14 June a local housewife saw her talking to two men outside the shop. On Friday she was seen walking in town with a similar-looking man. On the Saturday morning of her disappearance she was again seen with him inside or near the shop, with some accounts describing a heated conversation. An artist’s impression was widely circulated but later discounted by police. One later claim suggested the man may have been her brother Philip; this has not been confirmed. Local rumours of an unhappy marriage and possible affairs also circulated but remain unverified. Events of 16 June 1990 Trevaline opened the shop around 9:30 a.m. Roughly 25 friends and customers visited that morning and described her as relaxed and happy. Around 12:40 p.m. she left a handwritten note on the door saying she would be “back in two minutes.” She left behind her handbag (containing credit cards), car keys, jacket, fruit and flowers. A smartly dressed man was reportedly seen talking to her shortly before she put up the note. She was next seen buying an apple and banana and crossing Castle Street. The last confirmed sighting was near her home on Market Street at about 2:30 p.m. Two unconfirmed sightings followed later that afternoon. Her husband reported her missing around 11 p.m. No money was ever withdrawn from her accounts after she vanished. Investigation North Wales Police launched one of the force’s biggest inquiries: every household in Llangollen was interviewed, more than 1,500 names checked, about 700 cars eliminated, and searches covered the River Dee, canal, mine shafts and caves. No trace was found. The case was reopened in 2001 (Richard Evans was arrested and released without charge) and reviewed again around the 20th anniversary. Possible links to serial killers Robin Ligus and Christopher Halliwell were examined and not substantiated. Unconfirmed sightings were reported in London, France and Australia. Officers excavated the site on 19 March 2019 but found no human remains. The brothers maintained the remains must have been removed. Anonymous plaques later appeared claiming she was found there and removed. Police stated they found nothing and the case was no closer to being solved.
