HORSE OWNERS: DOES THE SIZE OF YOUR HORSE'S SHOE REALLY MATTER? 👀 AZNAR — PART 5! We're back with Aznar, our hunter jumper whose owner traveled all the way from New Jersey to have me evaluate and work on his feet. If you're just joining us, we've already worked through his hind feet, and in Part 4, I removed his existing front shoe, evaluated his hoof, addressed areas of concern, and worked on bringing his toe back. Now it's time to fit and nail on his new front shoe! In this video, I'm walking you through what I'm looking for when fitting a horseshoe to the hoof and why the size, weight, and fit of that shoe are important. Aznar previously had a heavier size 5 horseshoe, but I'm choosing to use a lighter size 4 shoe. I'll show you the two shoes side by side, explain their differences, and walk you through why I prefer the lighter option for this particular horse. Remember, horseshoeing isn't one-size-fits-all. What works for one horse may not be the best choice for another. The hoof itself, the horse's conformation, movement, workload, and individual needs all play a part in my decisions. Next, we're getting into something I think every horse owner should understand a little better — horseshoe nails and proper nail placement! I'm using Capewell 5 Slim Blade horseshoe nails, and I'll explain why I like them, how I position each nail, and what I'm watching for as I drive it through the hoof wall. There's more to nailing on a horseshoe than simply getting the nails through the hoof. Proper placement, direction, and how the nail exits the hoof wall all matter. Whether you're a horse owner wanting to better understand how horseshoes are fitted, someone learning how to nail on a horseshoe, or an aspiring farrier interested in horseshoe sizing, hoof balance, horseshoe nail placement, corrective horseshoeing, and hunter jumper hoof care, I hope this gives you a better understanding of the process. COMING UP IN PART 6! We're going to finish this front hoof by clinching the horseshoe nails, cleaning up the outside of the hoof, beveling and preparing the pads, and applying a Vettec Equi-Pak pour-in hoof pad! I'll explain why I prefer clipped horseshoes and show you how I apply the pour-in material to provide additional cushioning and sole protection. And wait until you see that satisfying blue pad reveal when I peel away the cardboard! 💙👀 After that, we've got just ONE LAST HOOF to finish Aznar's shoeing appointment! 👇 HORSE OWNERS: Has your farrier ever explained why they chose a particular size or type of horseshoe for your horse? And for those learning farrier work, what part of fitting and nailing on a shoe do you find the most challenging? I enjoy hearing your questions and experiences! Follow along for Part 6 and more real-world horse hoof trimming, horseshoeing, corrective hoof care, and educational farrier videos. #farrier #hoofcare #hunterjumper #horseshoeing #horse
