The Blackwell Tornado It formed as part of a major Great Plains tornado outbreak. The tornado touched down around 9:00 p.m. CST (roughly 9 p.m. local) about 8 miles west of Marland in Noble County, Oklahoma. It moved nearly due north, passing east/northeast of Tonkawa (where it caused some damage and the parent storm produced large hail), then tore through the east side of Blackwell in Kay County around 9:26–9:30 p.m. It continued north, passed east of Braman, curved somewhat, and dissipated southeast of South Haven in Sumner County, Kansas. Weather Path length: About 28–29 miles. Width: Roughly 400–500 yards (about ¼–⅓ mile) at its widest/peak intensity. Rating: F5 on the original Fujita scale (incredible damage, with winds estimated in the 261–318 mph range based on the destruction observed). Casualties: 20 deaths (19 in Blackwell + 1 northeast of town) and about 280 injuries. Damage: Roughly 80 city blocks affected. Around 400 homes were destroyed or swept away, another ~500 damaged; about 60 businesses destroyed or heavily damaged (including major employers such as the Acme Foundry and Hazel-Atlas Glass plant); the local hospital was also badly hit. Property damage in Blackwell was estimated around $8 million (1955 dollars). Much of the western half of town was largely spared the worst. Weather +1 Survivors and contemporary accounts described intense electrical activity, with the funnel sometimes appearing to glow or show arcs of light. The same supercell produced a second F5 tornado shortly afterward that devastated Udall, Kansas (killing 80), making this one of the deadliest nights of tornadoes. #unflopme #fypviral #tornadotok #blackwell #oklahoma
