I got called out to treat an injured kudu bull after the owner noticed he was limping, losing weight, and had swelling around his right hind foot. With the July heat, we decided the safest time to work on him was after dark. The owner darted him with a sedative combination I had prepared, and the big guy settled down quickly. One of the challenges of working at night is judging an animal’s level of sedation. As he walked toward me, it was difficult to read his eyes in the dark. A well-sedated animal usually isn’t focused on you, and at first he looked just alert enough to make me pause. As he got closer, I could tell he was at the right plane of sedation, so I safely restrained him and got to work. The source of the problem was a wound on the outside of his right hind foot. I performed a regional limb perfusion, which is one of my favorite techniques. By temporarily isolating the blood supply to the lower limb, I’m able to deliver extremely high concentrations of antibiotics directly to the injured tissues and hoof while minimizing exposure to the rest of the body. After treatment, he recovered smoothly from the sedation and was back on his feet.
