A mysterious little Northumberland tower with a rather unexpected history… Tucked away in the countryside above Rothbury stands Sharpe’s Folly, a remarkable stone tower dating back to the 18th century. At first glance, you could easily mistake it for the remains of a small castle, but its origins tell a very different story. The tower was commissioned by Reverend Dr Thomas Sharp, Rector of Rothbury, who is said to have had it built partly to provide employment for local stonemasons during difficult times. But there was another reason behind its construction. Sharp had a fascination with astronomy, and the tower was designed as an observatory, offering sweeping views across the surrounding Northumberland countryside and skies. Believed to be Northumberland’s oldest folly, this unusual little building has stood here for around three centuries and is now Grade II* listed. It’s one of those fascinating pieces of hidden Northumberland history that I love to discover and learn its story. #rothbury #northumberland
