🏆 THE PUMA: FROM A KENTUCKY DERBY SCRATCH TO OUTRUNNING CHAMPIONS IN THE BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC! By WinningStride Every Stride Tells a Story Sometimes a horse’s story goes far beyond the number of victories on his record. And The Puma might be a perfect example. On May 2, 2026, The Puma was scratched from the Kentucky Derby on race morning after developing swelling in his leg from a skin infection. He had earned his opportunity with a victory in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) and a narrow second-place finish in the Florida Derby (G1), where he lost by just a nose. But just hours before the Run for the Roses, that opportunity was gone. Six months later, on October 31, The Puma stepped into the starting gate of the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, facing the very horse who had won the Kentucky Derby he missed. And look at the competition he faced! The field included: 🏆 Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, reigning Horse of the Year, and Whitney Stakes winner. 🏆 Golden Tempo, the 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner. 🏆 Forever Young, Japan’s globe-trotting superstar, defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion, and two-time Saudi Cup winner. 🏆 Napoleon Solo, the 2026 Preakness Stakes winner. 🏆 Knightsbridge, winner of the 2026 Pacific Classic. Also competing was Japan’s T O Password, a multiple stakes winner who finished fifth in the 2024 Kentucky Derby. These weren’t ordinary competitors. They represented some of the best Thoroughbreds from the United States and Japan. And The Puma, making his first start against older horses, proved he belonged in that company. Under Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano, The Puma settled near the back of the field before producing a strong rally through the stretch. Only Sovereignty finished ahead of him, winning by 1¾ lengths. The Puma finished second, ahead of Knightsbridge, T O Password, Forever Young, Golden Tempo, and Napoleon Solo. Think about that for a moment. The horse who missed his opportunity to run in the Kentucky Derby had just finished ahead of that very Derby’s winner, Golden Tempo, along with the defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion and the Preakness winner! 📈 BUT HERE’S WHAT REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION. The Puma has only eight career starts and two victories, but take a look at his Equibase Speed Figures: January debut: 88 Sam F. Davis: 90 Tampa Bay Derby: 95 Florida Derby: 97 Haskell Stakes: 96 Travers Stakes: 100 Pennsylvania Derby: 108 Breeders’ Cup Classic: 115 From an 88 in January to a career-best 115 in October! That’s a 27-point improvement in only eight starts. His two victories came in graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby. He has never finished worse than fourth and has now earned more than $2.3 million. For a colt who didn’t make his racing debut until January of his 3-year-old season, that’s quite a progression. And now comes the interesting question. 🐎 WHAT ABOUT 2027? Sovereignty has completed his racing career, and Knightsbridge is also headed to stud. That leaves opportunities in the older dirt division. The Puma’s connections have already expressed their intention to bring him back for a 4-year-old campaign, provided he comes out of the Classic in good condition. Of course, one outstanding performance doesn’t guarantee future success. Golden Tempo, Napoleon Solo, and other talented horses could also take major steps forward next season. But The Puma has shown something worth paying attention to. He is developing, his speed figures are improving, and his latest performance came against championship-level competition at 1¼ miles. Could we be watching one of the leading horses of the 2027 season beginning to emerge? With Sovereignty retiring, could The Puma become the horse to beat in 2027? Or does he still have more to prove? I’d love to hear your thoughts! #winningstride #EveryStrideTellsAStory #ThePuma #BreedersCup #HorseRacing
