Hello, hello! It’s Black Rose again! This video is about the a poem written in the language of Hmong in the dialect of Mong Leng (Moob Leeg). This poem is dedicated to any woman who has faced hardship in a marriage that didn't work out. Historically in our culture, daughters were often turned away from their parents' homes simply because they were not boys. We need to break this tradition so mothers can be there to lift up their daughters during such vulnerable times. Lug Txaj: Ntxhais Ua Neej Tsi Kawg: A Poetry of Estrangement A poem about feeling alienated, distant, or separated from a spouse, family, or society that had a daughter who was also estranged/separated. The daughter apologized to the mother for her life that didn’t work and the mother is comforting her daughter. By assuring the daughter that the mother understands her that life is never going to be perfect and it’s okay to leave when it doesn't work out. The mother will stand by her daughter and will love her the same as her little girls always. The mother will not use old traditions to dislike the daughter because the mother had been through the hardship of her parents’ used old traditions to dissuade her back into the family. So the mother will not do the same to her daughter. This is a deeply moving poem, drawing from my experience and I used “Lug Txaj” (folksong/poetic expression),to capture the profound bond of maternal empathy—breaking the cycle of rigid tradition to offer safe harbor to a daughter. Below, is the poem written into verses, retaining the Hmong phrase "Ntxhais Ua Neej Tsi Kawg" (a daughter whose marriage/life did not reach the end) as an honored motif, and structuring the conversation between mother and daughter. Lug Txaj: Ntxhais Ua Neej Tsi Kawg (A Poetry of Estrangement) I. The Return My little girl comes back to me today, with heavy steps and head bowed down in shame. She whispers through her tears, "I failed the way," and softly apologizes for her name. She tells me of a life that couldn't last, of broken vows, of distance, and of pain A daughter whose shared journey now has passed, left standing alone beneath the falling rain. II. The Mother’s Comfort I pull her close and hold her to my chest, the same small child I cradled long ago. "Hush now, my daughter, rest your weary head, there is no shame in paths you could not go. Life was never promised to be clear, nor built of seamless silk that never tears. When love becomes a shadow born of fear, it is alright to leave the heavy cares." III. Breaking the Cycle "They tried to bind me once with ancient laws, with rigid rules and tradition's heavy weight. They turned away and pointed out my flaws, and urged me back into an empty fate. I felt that cold estrangement in my soul, the silence of a family turned to stone. I promised then, if I were ever whole, my daughter would not walk that road alone." IV. Safe Harbor "So let old customs whisper in the dark— I will not judge you by the ancient ways. You are the light, the spirit, and the spark that blessed my heart in all your younger days. No matter where the winding road may bend, or if the world decides to turn away, my love remains unchanged until the end you are my little girl, and here you stay." A Poetic’s words: "Ntxhais Ua Neej Tsi Kawg": Kept as part of the core narrative. The poem centers on validating that a marriage ending prematurely does not mean the daughter has failed as a person. Tone: Soft, protective, and resolute. The mother actively rejects patriarchal/traditional shame ("I will not judge you by the ancient ways") because she remembers her own pain. Rhythm: Written in alternating iambic meter (ABAB / AABB rhyming structures) to give it the gentle, song-like cadence of traditional Lug Txaj.
