@hot_off_the_presses: A 26-year-old man dressed as the Grim Reaper sparked an emergency response after climbing onto the roof of a hospital in Wales and remaining there for nearly 50 minutes, watching people enter the building below. On June 6, Leon Gillespie, from Deganwy, appeared on an elevated walkway above the main entrance of Glan Clwyd Hospital in Denbighshire, wearing a hooded black costume. Witnesses believed he was carrying a long blade, prompting authorities to dispatch four police vehicles, a fire engine and trained negotiators. He eventually climbed down using a ladder. Gillespie later appeared at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance on NHS property without a reasonable excuse. He received a £200 fine and was ordered to pay £100 in court costs. He also admitted stealing cat food and litter from a local Pets at Home store, along with food and beverages from a nearby Sainsbury’s. The court ordered him to compensate the businesses. However, the case took a more serious turn when details about his mental health emerged. District Judge Gwyn Jones acknowledged that Gillespie had been experiencing mental health difficulties around the time of the incident. Just ten days after the rooftop episode, Gillespie was detained under the Mental Health Act for almost two weeks. Hospital officials subsequently reiterated their zero-tolerance policy toward threatening behavior, aggression and disruptions on NHS premises, emphasizing the importance of protecting patients, visitors and healthcare workers. Interestingly, court reports suggested his costume resembled a crow more than the traditional Grim Reaper. No explanation for his actions was provided during the hearing.
