@horror.freemedia: A 75-year-old Massachusetts woman says storage bills are draining the Social Security income she depends on. Marylyn Johnson, known as “Mema,” spends her days helping care for preschoolers through a Foster Grandparent Program in Dorchester. But she’s struggling to find a permanent home of her own. Johnson says she lost her housing after what she described as an administrative issue caused her housing voucher to be terminated. When she returned home, she says the door had been padlocked and some of her belongings — including her mattress and box spring — had already been thrown away. She now rents a room while paying for three U-Haul storage units to hold what she has left. “That’s my Social Security check right there,” Johnson said about the storage costs. Finding another affordable home hasn’t been easy. Johnson says some housing providers have warned her the wait for an available unit could be anywhere from two to five years. Despite everything, she still shows up before sunrise to help care for children and says she believes something will eventually work out. Do you think seniors on fixed incomes should get faster access to affordable housing? #HousingCrisis #SocialSecurity #Massachusetts #AffordableHousing #SeniorCitizens
