Overnight from October 14 to 15, 6-year-old Orlando Jaikarran disappeared from his father's home in Bath Settlement, on the West Coast Berbice in Guyana. Orlando had been living with his father, 45-year-old Bharrat Jaikarran, and 2 of his siblings since his parents separated. Jaikarran reported the boy missing, saying his other children had woken him to tell him Orlando was gone. He denied harming his son, even when his own mother asked him. Then surveillance footage surfaced. It reportedly showed Jaikarran heading toward a canal at night with what appeared to be the boy, and coming back without him. Jaikarran reportedly confessed. He allegedly told investigators that on October 11, a pujari, a Hindu priest, had told him Orlando was not his biological son. He said he left his motorcycle near the sea dam, went home for the boy and threw him into the canal, knowing he couldn't swim. He reportedly believed no one would be suspicious because Orlando often went with him on early-morning fishing trips. In the early hours of October 20, information from Jaikarran led searchers to Orlando's decomposed body in the Sea Dam Canal. The head was missing, along with parts of the left hand and right foot. After the discovery, Jaikarran changed his account and reportedly claimed the boy had been used in a ritual. The pujari was taken into custody, and searches turned up 6 cutlasses at a house in Bath Settlement. It hasn't been established whether any of them was used. President Irfaan Ali called for a review of the d*ath penalty after the case. An autopsy on October 21 was inconclusive because of the body's decomposition. The father and the pujari remain in custody, and the latest reports show no charges yet.
