@epsteindarkweb3: Brussels, Belgium, 1958. At the Brussels World's Fair, Belgium created a "Congolese village" as part of its exhibition of the Belgian Congo. More than 600 Congolese people were brought to Belgium, and around 120 were displayed during the day in the exhibition's Tropical Gardens, where visitors came to observe them and the reconstructed village. The exhibition was presented as a showcase of Belgium's colonial achievements, at a time when demands for Congolese independence were becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. But the display soon attracted criticism. Congolese students and intellectuals in Belgium protested the racist and humiliating treatment of the people being exhibited, and many of the Congolese "craftsmen" eventually left the village. The village closed before the World's Fair itself endedToday, photographs from Expo 58 remain a disturbing record of the final years of Belgium's colonial rule in Congo-and of a time when people were still being presented to European crowds as part of an exhibition.
