BTS world tour Arirang in São Paulo, Brasil, D3 - 31/10/26 #fyp #btsarmy #bts #arirangtour #concert
The track started in Berkeley, California. High school friends Marcus Thompson, Alex Hill, and Michael Marshall (who sang lead vocals) wrote the song while still students at Berkeley High. Thompson wrote the lyrics based on the high school gossip, petty backstabbing, and drama surrounding his social circle. Initially calling themselves the Timex Crew, they shopped the demo around Northern California. It was rejected by several artists, including local funk legends Con Funk Shun. In late 1985, the demo caught the ear of Jay King, an ambitious Sacramento promoter and aspiring producer. King saw the hit potential immediately. He renamed the group Timex Social Club, booked time at Starlight Studios in Richmond, California, and produced the finished track. King pressed the single on his independent Jay Records label and used Los Angeles distributor Macola Records to push vinyl directly to independent record stores and local DJs. He personally promoted the record, focusing on major urban radio markets in Texas (like Dallas and Houston). Radio reaction was instantaneous; requests flooded in, and the 12-inch began flying off store shelves. By the summer of 1986, "Rumors" was climbing the Billboard Hot 100 and heading to No. 1 on the R&B charts. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons booked the group to open 38 dates on Run-D.M.C.’s historic Raising Hell tour alongside the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. However, severe management friction quickly erupted: Business, financial, and managerial disagreements flared between the band members and Jay King regarding royalties and label control. Before their debut LP was even finished, Timex Social Club severed ties with King and signed directly with Danya Records/Fantasy Records. Because King controlled the original Jay Records master, Timex Social Club had to re-record "Rumors" at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley for their 1986 debut album, Vicious Rumors. Furious at losing the group right as the record went massive, Jay King pivoted immediately. He recruited vocalist Samuelle Prater, Valerie Watson, Denzil Foster, and Thomas McElroy to form a brand-new group: Club Nouveau (meaning "The New Club"). Jealousy" (The Response Song): Club Nouveau immediately recorded and released their debut single, "Jealousy" (1986). King intentionally crafted "Jealousy" over the exact same underlying tempo, drum programming, and bassline style as "Rumors". Lyrically, "Jealousy" acted as a direct jab back at Timex Social Club, essentially asking why people turn on the ones who helped them. Radio listeners were wildly confused, with many assuming Club Nouveau was Timex Social Club under a new name. Timex Social Club: Despite follow-up R&B hit singles like "Thinkin' About Ya" and "Mixed-Up World," the internal strain took its toll, and the group disbanded by 1987. Club Nouveau: Capitalized on the momentum and became a major act in their own right, scoring a global No. 1 hit in 1987 with their synth-funk cover of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me." Club Nouveau members Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy went on to become one of the most successful production duos of the late '80s and '90s, creating and producing multi-platinum acts like En Vogue and Tony! Toni! Toné!. Ultimately, "Rumors" stands as a cornerstone of 1986 Bay Area post-disco/electro-funk—a single song that gave birth to an iconic synth-groove template and altered the trajectory of modern R&B. Core Classic Lineup (1985–1987) During the release of "Rumors" and their 1986 album Vicious Rumors, the core lineup consisted of: Michael Marshall – Lead Vocals (sung the distinctive lead vocal on "Rumors") Marcus Thompson – Founder, Writer, DJ & Producer Alex "Landy" Hill – Keyboards, Synthesizers & Co-writer Kevin Moore – Vocals & Keyboards #MusicLovers #alex -n#music 👇 Follow for your daily music dose!
