In December 2017, Richard Averill claimed a seven-year-old mare called Making Havoc out of a race at Gulfstream Park for $6,250. He wasn't buying a racehorse. Ocala Stud had bred her, sold her as a two-year-old, and wanted her back in its broodmare band — so they asked him to claim her. Four years later she produced a filly by the farm's own stallion, Awesome Slew. That filly is R Disaster. In May she won the Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs, a Grade 1, leading every step and holding Ways and Means. On 1 October she took the Gallant Bloom at Belmont for the second year running. She is a millionaire. On Saturday she runs in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland, seven furlongs, from post 4 at 8-1, Tyler Gaffalione up for Saffie Joseph Jr. It hasn't all been straight lines — she was beaten in the Ballerina at Saratoga this summer, and most cheap claims never produce a horse like this. But the mare who did cost $6,250, and she was never claimed to race at all. The full story — racehorseownership101.com
