The state housing department found the city failed to properly rezone for new housing, as Judge Katherine Bacal's earlier order required. ⚖️ The penalties: Bacal wrote that the court "intends to modify its earlier ruling to impose penalties at the rate of $20,000 per month" for June, July, and August of 2026. A $50,000 per month penalty would be imposed from September 2026 onward "until the violation is cured." Bacal had previously paused fines on city leaders to give the city a chance to get its plan approved by the state. 🏛️ The city's position: City council members argue that as a charter city they can sidestep some state laws. City leaders say their lawsuits are still helping taxpayers by delaying implementation of state laws in town. Mayor Casey McKeon wrote in a text: "There is a hearing this afternoon where our attorneys will be arguing the merits of the court's ruling." 📚 The track record: Judges have sided almost exclusively with the state on issues including the city's housing plan, voter ID and sanctuary state laws, per the article.
