I had a girl in my class her name was Na Chen. She was from China and only spoke Mandarin. She had a translator so we could communicate. I knew we couldn’t understand each other but I clung to her and protected her. She was so innocent and clueless. Straight from China. She asked if I was an Indian when I introduced myself to her? Mind you, I had a wash and set and I told her no I’m black. She got confused, then I said African American lol. I walked her to her classes and met her halfway from her family Chinese store and would walk her to school with me. When she met another Chinese girl, who’s Americanized and she began doing my job with Na in school, I was pretty sad but happy for her at the same time. Like what? You don’t need me anymore? Her family still loved me tho and they always gave me free Chinese food and candy from China. Few months go by and Na invited me to her older sisters wedding in Long Island. And I went! My mom said yes! She let me go with Na’s family. I was 18yo still in high school (senior). We took the Chinese bus to the city, stayed in a hotel in China town. They took me to get breakfast the next morning walking through China town and they gave me this Chinese pastry but it looked exactly like a yellow dish sponge lol. Soooo good! I loved how they included me for taking care of her and protecting her. We no longer are in touch that was almost 15 years ago now but I think of her often. Instead of making Na’s first experience in America horrible I protected her and showed her the way. And her family did the same for me at her sister’s wedding.
