As a woman in STEM, & space specifically, I grew up dreaming of working in this field. I didn’t see many women, so for a long time I thought it was an unattainable dream. Representation is very very very important. We’ve done a lot of work in recent years, so much so that NASA’s recent astronaut class was more women than men for the first time in history. We go to space “For All Humanity” as the Artemis motto says. So to not select a single woman for this mission (when there’s a pretty significant number of highly qualified women astronauts right now) feels very intentional in the context of the current political climate. And it rightfully upset a lot of people. I can’t tell you how many messages I got from other women or parents with little girls saying they felt like it was a major slap in the face, we’re going back to the boys club vibes of Apollo, and it’s no longer an inspirational mission they’ll pay attention to. I hear all your arguments that maybe they’re saving the women for the landings, and I sure hope that’s the case. But we won’t get to those landings if we can’t maintain public support. So no, you’re absolutely right, it shouldn’t be about gender. It shouldn’t matter. But unfortunately that’s not the world we live in yet. Lastly, I am aware of the NASA statement today, but as someone who works in space communications, every word in that announcement was carefully chosen. #artemis #nasa #moon
