Your personal taste is an idea to test, not proof that an ad will work. I learned this by making ads I thought my audience would like, then seeing completely different ideas work. Sharing a demographic with your customer does not mean you experience an ad the same way they do. You know the strategy behind it. They are deciding whether to keep scrolling. Here is a way to put that into practice: 1. Name your assumption. Write down why you think a particular opening, image or message will appeal to the customer, so the test has a clear question. 2. Make a contrasting version. Choose a different way to communicate the same benefit, especially an approach you would normally reject on personal taste alone. 3. Keep the business objective visible. A creative you like less might generate a better result, but attention by itself does not establish that it sells. 4. Read the results before defending the design. Look for evidence that supports or challenges your assumption, and note where the data is still too thin. 5. Carry the lesson into the next brief. Save what you learned about the audience, rather than turning one winning ad into a rule that every future ad must follow. Use the steps in this description as your next creative-test checklist. The point is to give your audience a chance to surprise you.
