Chilling in the plant room, thinking about Fourth Wing, and getting ready to start the next book, Iron Flame! Overall, I’d say Fourth Wing was worth the purchase! I really enjoyed the world-building throughout the book. Violet has some good character development, and I especially enjoyed how she uses her intellect to find solutions to problems that would normally be solved through physical strength. I also liked Dain’s fall from grace, going from an old love interest to someone Violet begins to see differently, while she finds herself drawn toward Xaden. I guess my biggest criticism is that it felt like I was following two different stories at the same time, with both sacrificing some of their depth for the other. One story is a forbidden political romance, following the disgraced heir of a supposed traitor and the neglected daughter of a powerful political figure as they find love in each other despite the world seemingly denying them that possibility. The other story follows the frail, bookish daughter of a great military leader, whose own mother forces her into military service, where she must either survive or die. Either way, removing what her mother seems to view as a stain on the family name. Both are interesting stories, but I feel like they could almost stand on their own, sharing the same world without necessarily needing each other. I felt like both Xaden and Violet gave in to their desires without enough tension or buildup. At the same time, I don’t think Violet’s personal achievements and struggles were highlighted nearly enough. Then, having the dragons simply not wanting to be apart as the main reason these two stories are tied together felt a little underwhelming to me. Violet’s story as a dragon rider doesn’t necessarily need Xaden’s help to be compelling, although she certainly appreciates the support he provides. Likewise, the political romance between Violet and Xaden doesn’t necessarily need their development as dragon riders to work. Do the two stories mesh well enough? Absolutely! But I feel like one should have been more central, with elements of the other used to support and strengthen it rather than having both compete for attention. That being said, I still think it’s a good book, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes in Iron Flame! #houseplants #plantsoftiktok #plants #indoorplants #indoorgarden We’re going LIVE on Palmstreet on Nov 1, 6PM EST https://palmstreet.app/l/9ybr07na
