@hot_off_the_presses: On Thursday 18 November 2021 - just over three months after the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan - Kim Kardashian helped fund a flight to bring the country's female youth football team to safety in the UK. Following the Taliban takeover, officials announced that women would be banned from participating in sports, putting female athletes at risk of persecution for continuing their sporting careers. As a result, hundreds of female athletes attempted to flee the country, with around 35 players from Afghanistan's women's youth development football team, many aged between 13 and 19, making it over to neighbouring Pakistan, where they were granted temporary visas following intervention from Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Despite having escaped immediate danger, some of the girls' families reportedly received death threats and demands to reveal their whereabouts. After New York-based rabbi Moshe Margaretten got in touch with Kim Kardashian to explain the group's dire situation, the reality TV star agreed to help fund their onward journey to the UK. "Maybe an hour later, after the Zoom call, I got a text message that Kim wants to fund the entire flight," Margaretten said. The UK football club Leeds United also offered to assist with the mission, with chairman Andrea Radrizzani playing a role in the rescue effort. After Kardashian agreed to fund the flight alongside her lingerie brand SKIMS, the Tzedek Association helped arrange a privately chartered plane to transport the group. The team, alongside their families and coaches, travelled to the UK, with around 130 people arriving at London's Stansted Airport in the early hours of Thursday 18 November. #fyp #kimkardashian
