@history.philippines: Albay, 1814 · Mayon Destroys Cagsawa February 1814. In Albay, on Luzon, Mayon volcano erupts. At eight in the morning, it throws a thick column of stones, sand and ash into the sky. A priest in Guinobatan sees it rise like a white plume, in bright sunshine. Then the ground shakes. The sky turns dark, crossed by lightning. Burning stones rain down. Houses catch fire. People run for the highest ground. In the church of Budiao, two hundred people die. By afternoon... the sky clears. Camalig, Budiao, Guinobatan, half of Albay, and the town of Cagsawa are burned and destroyed. Where Budiao stood, coconut palms are buried to their tops. An eyewitness counts twelve thousand dead. PHIVOLCS today gives about twelve hundred. Survivors rebuild Cagsawa lower down, at a small place called Daraga. The ruins of its old church are now a National Cultural Treasure. — A new story from Philippine history every day.
