@reps_up: France has approved a proposal for a new €0.055 tax per GB of internet traffic, and game downloads could be affected. If GTA 6 ends up being around 218 GB, downloading it could cost €12 in tax under the proposal. The tax could also affect other big game downloads and streaming services like Netflix and YouTube. However, it’s not law yet. The proposal still needs to pass through the remaining legislative process in France. #France #europe #gaming #pcgaming #techtok
Game companies would probably push against this as well. Because it would end up forcing companies to bring back physical copies, because players would refuse to have to redownload/reinstall games if it meant having to pay that price every time. And companies hate physical copies.

The post leaves out a key detail - it was only passed by one vote in a committee (11-10) and the people in control of the French government oppose it so it's essentially dead on arrival in the French senate. Also worth noting that it's a tax on the companies like Netflix, Prime Video etc, not a tax directly on regular people, although if implemented those companies would absolutely pass on the costs to normal people.
