Rainbow is essentially the "solo project" of virtuoso guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, which he created after leaving Deep Purple. The band became an important milestone in the history of hard rock and heavy metal, but it was famous not only for its music, but also for its constant lineup changes. Here are a few of the most interesting facts about it: 🎸 A "revolving door" as a way of life If you look at Rainbow's discography, you'll notice something surprising: no two studio albums were recorded by the same lineup. Blackmore was ruthless: if a musician displeased him in any way, he was fired. For example, he fired bassist Mark Clarke right in the studio because he didn't like the way Clarke played with his fingers, and after that Blackmore himself recorded the bass parts for most of the songs. 🤝 "The chicken that lays golden eggs" Rainbow's first vocalist was the legendary Ronnie James Dio. Blackmore invited him after hearing his band Elf perform, and later admitted: "When I first heard him, I got chills down my spine." However, in 1979 Blackmore fired him too. The reason: Ritchie wanted to move toward a more commercial, "radio-friendly" sound and sing about love, while Dio preferred fantasy, wizards, and dragons. 💡 "Equipment for the Rainbow" At concerts, the band used a computerized rainbow made of 3,000 light bulbs, which stretched 40 feet (more than 12 meters) across the stage. It was part of the show and a tribute to the band's name. 🔥 The incident at California Jam In 1974, before Rainbow was officially formed, Blackmore took part in the California Jam festival with Deep Purple. Due to a mistake by the organizers with the pyrotechnics, the fire flared up so much that Ritchie barely managed to jump back. He lost part of his curls, became furious, and smashed a TV camera with his guitar. 💰 Modest numbers and legacy Despite its status as a cult band and its influence on metal, Rainbow sold "only" about 28 million albums worldwide. For comparison: that's less than some pop stars. Nevertheless, in 2020 Classic Rock magazine included them in its list of the "50 greatest rock bands of all time." 👑 Return and retreat into the Middle Ages Blackmore disbanded and reassembled Rainbow several times (1975–1984, 1994–1997, 2015–2019). In the end, however, he stepped away from rock entirely, married vocalist Candice Night, and created the project Blackmore's Night, where he plays folk rock and Renaissance music. If you want to listen to their "golden" period, it's best to start with the album "Rising" (1976) with Dio — many critics consider it one of the best hard rock albums of the '70s. #rock #rockmusic #hardrock #heavymetal #70s
