Object permanence in ADHD is the experience of something feeling like it stops existing in your mind when it's no longer in front of you. But here's the important distinction: ADHD doesn't actually impair object permanence. It affects working memory, attention, and the ability to keep things mentally accessible. How it shows up Objects: You put something in a drawer and completely forget you own it. Relationships: You genuinely love someone, but if you don't see or hear from them, you might forget to reach out for weeks. Tasks: If a task isn't visible or actively reminding you of its existence, it disappears from your mental to-do list. Emotions: When you're feeling good, it can be difficult to emotionally reconnect with how bad you felt yesterday, and vice versa. Goals: You get excited about a new project, but once it's out of sight, your motivation and awareness of it fade. Why does this happen? Three ADHD-related difficulties contribute: Working memory: Difficulty holding information actively in mind. Prospective memory: Difficulty remembering to do something in the future. Attention regulation: Things that aren't immediately stimulating, urgent, or visible are less likely to capture your attention. What about relationships? This is where it gets interesting. Someone with ADHD might deeply care about a friend but go months without contacting them. Not because they stopped caring, but because the relationship isn't consistently being brought into conscious awareness. Out of sight doesn't mean out of love. However, this doesn't happen to everyone with ADHD, and it doesn't excuse consistently neglecting someone's needs. The scientific distinction In developmental psychology, object permanence means understanding that something continues to exist even when you can't see it. Babies develop this ability early in life, and people with ADHD generally have it. What people online call ADHD object permanence is more accurately described as difficulties with working memory, prospective memory, and attention regulation. In one sentence: ADHD doesn't make you forget that things exist; it can make you forget to think about them. #Neurodivergent #ADHDHelp #ADHDAwareness #ADHD
