imagine you’re on hour 11 of your shift and it’s 98° outside and you’re just think about getting home to have dinner with your wife and daughter. you’re packing up your tools and suddenly 3 masked men throw you to the ground, punch you in your ribs, and throw you in the back of an unmarked minivan. you ask what you did and they tell you that for the last 10 years, you’ve had an unpaid parking ticket. that’s the kinda weight the “crime” of being here “illegally” carries. it’s not a felony, it’s not even a misdemeanor. our people come here to work their assess off, all while still not enjoying the full luxuries and benefits that being a citizen comes with. they are not criminals, they are dads and husbands and coworkers and employees and bosses just trying to make it to the end of each week, like we are. it’s so funny that you see them being kidnapped and taken off work sites and yanked out of their work vans, but never picked up for an actual crime.
