In early 1975, middleweight contender Rubin
In early 1975, middleweight contender Rubin "Hurricane" Carter sent a copy of his autobiography, The Sixteenth Round, to Bob Dylan from inside the Clinton State Prison in New Jersey. Carter had been serving a life sentence since 1967 after being convicted for the 1966 triple murder at the Lafayette Grill in Paterson—a crime he steadfastly maintained he did not commit. Dylan, who hadn't written an explicit protest track in nearly a decade, read the book and was deeply moved. In July 1975, Dylan drove to the prison to meet Carter face-to-face. Convinced of his innocence and appalled by the racial bias of the investigation, Dylan committed to taking up his cause. Dylan partnered with theater director and songwriter Jacques Levy to structure the narrative. Unlike Dylan's typical poetic or abstract lyrics, "Hurricane" was written almost like a cinematic screenplay or investigative journalistic report. The lyrics call out specific individuals involved in the night of the shooting and the trial—Patty Valentine, Alfred Bello, Arthur Dexter Bradley, and Detective DeSimone. Levy helped Dylan paint vivid visual scenes and keep the narrative moving rapidly from the gunshots to the courtroom corruptions Dylan recorded the track in October 1975 during the sessions for the Desire album. However, Columbia Records' legal team raised serious alarms: lines referring to Alfred Bello and Arthur Dexter Bradley "robbing the bodies" could lead to massive libel lawsuits. Dylan was forced to re-record the track on October 24, 1975. He brought in violinist Scarlet Rivera, whose urgent, gypsy-style violin riff gave the track its unmistakable tension, along with backup vocalist Ronee Blakley. The revised version swapped out the risky lines and pushed the tempo to an intense, driving pace. Dylan launched the famous Rolling Thunder Revue tour in late 1975, using it as a vehicle to shine a national spotlight on Carter's case. On December 8, 1975, Dylan organized the "Night of the Hurricane" benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, featuring guest stars like Muhammad Ali, Stevie Wonder, and Joan Baez, raising funds for Carter's legal defense. March 1976: Just months after the song was released as a single and blew up on radio stations across America, the New Jersey Supreme Court overturned the 1967 convictions of Carter and John Artis, citing that prosecutors had withheld critical evidence. Carter was released on bail. November 1976: At a second trial, despite the public outcry, both men were re-convicted. November 1985: Federal Judge H. Lee Sarokin finally overturned the convictions for good, ruling that the prosecution had been "predicated upon an appeal to racism rather than reason, and concealment rather than disclosure." Dylan's song gave a voice to a legal battle that took nearly two decades to resolve, standing as one of pop culture's most effective advocacy anthems. By 1975, mainstream protest music had faded from top-40 radio compared to the height of the 1960s civil rights movement. "Hurricane" proved that a dense, heavily narrative 8-minute political single could become a commercial hit, peaking at No. 33 in the US and No. 43 in the UK, while driving Dylan's album Desire to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The release of "Hurricane" and the subsequent Rolling Thunder Revue set a template for high-profile benefit concerts and multi-artist social causes. It directly influenced later global advocacy initiatives like Live Aid, Amnesty International's Human Rights Concerts, and individual defense campaign concerts throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. The song served as the core musical anchor for Norman Jewison’s 1999 feature film The Hurricane, starring Denzel Washington. Decades after its release, "Hurricane" continues to be cited by civil rights organizations globally (such as Global Citizen and human rights groups) as a timeless anthem against wrongful conviction and racial profiling. #MusicLovers #alex -n#music 👇 Follow for your daily music dose!
