They turned Mary Magdalene into a prostitute. But the Bible NEVER did. Let that sink in. One of the most important women in early Christianity was remembered for centuries as a repentant prostitute, despite the fact that Scripture never identifies her as one. Mary Magdalene was a follower of Jesus. She supported his ministry, witnessed his crucifixion, and was among the first to witness his resurrection. According to John 20:18, she was the one who announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” Yet in 591 CE, Pope Gregory I delivered a sermon combining Mary Magdalene with other biblical women, including an unnamed woman described as a sinner. The Bible NEVER says that unnamed woman was a prostitute. It doesn’t even tell us what her sin was! But centuries of religious interpretation transformed Mary Magdalene into a symbol of sexual sin and repentance. And here’s what makes this even more interesting. Even the Vatican has acknowledged this historical confusion! In 2016, an official Vatican statement recognized Pope Gregory’s influence on this mistaken identification. And in July 2026, the Vatican’s own newspaper published an article explaining how this distortion contributed to the demonization of women’s sexuality. Think about that. A woman entrusted with announcing the resurrection became more famous for a sexual history that Scripture never gave her. Ladies, this is why we question what we’ve been taught. Because there is a difference between what the Bible actually says and what centuries of religious authorities have told us it says. And women deserve to have their stories told accurately. #MaryMagdalene #WomensHistory #Deconstruction #exvangelical #Patriarchy
