@finvory: Hennessy’s connection to Black American culture didn’t begin with hip-hop. It goes back decades before rappers started mentioning the cognac in their music. And part of that history involves a French luxury brand recognizing Black customers when other companies often ignored them. During the 20th century, African American soldiers served in France during both world wars. Some encountered French wines and spirits, including cognac, while stationed overseas. But the relationship between Hennessy and Black American consumers became especially visible after World War II. Hennessy’s American distributor was Schieffelin & Company. The company had a history of involvement with Black educational and civil rights institutions through its leadership. And by the 1950s, Hennessy was deliberately advertising to Black Americans. In 1951, the brand placed an advertisement in Ebony, one of the country’s most influential Black magazines. It subsequently advertised in Jet. These weren’t simply advertisements appearing by chance. They were part of an effort to reach Black consumers directly. Then came another important milestone. In 1963, Schieffelin hired Herb Douglas, a former Olympic athlete who had won a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1948 London Olympics. Douglas became one of the early Black executives in the American spirits industry. He spent decades building relationships with Black consumers, businesses, and cultural institutions. Hennessy’s marketing became increasingly connected to Black American nightlife, entertainment, and celebrations. And by the time hip-hop became a dominant cultural force, Hennessy was already a familiar brand in many Black communities. Rappers didn’t create that relationship. They helped make it even more visible. In the early 2000s, songs such as Busta Rhymes and P. Diddy’s “Pass the Courvoisier” helped demonstrate how deeply cognac had entered hip-hop culture. But Hennessy’s history with Black Americans stretched back much further. The relationship developed through advertising, community engagement, consumer preferences, and generations of cultural influence. Hip-hop didn’t introduce Hennessy to Black America. It inherited a relationship that had already been developing for decades. #Hennessy #BlackHistory #HipHopHistory #HerbDouglas #EbonyMagazine

People do not realize, until the US influences other countries. Blacks were loved everywhere. It was Black that saved the Cadillac. It was Blacks that saved the US in the Depression/recession. It is a Black man that designed the Chrysler 300 for Cadillac. A company we saved from bankruptcy. Jack Daniel’s was created by a black man.
