Also my hot take is that more counselors should take Medicaid, and just cap how many Medicaid clients they can see at once. That way you can serve the underserved, and make sure you’re taking care of yourself financially

Insurance companies are indeed the problem. You don't spend years in grad school, study for a exam, pay fees to practice, more years in training, dealing with the weight of your clients mental health on top of yours, all to not be able to even pay your student loans back. It's asinine.

but other providers are not getting same treatment because the treatment is visible, dentists/surgeons/medical etc… our impact is as meaningful but not necessarily visible it’s a struggle :/ it’s frustrating

I’m definitely mad at insurances. I used to make an awful jokes that I’ll always have job security bc we all need therapy - but now with cuts to services and paying PsyD the same as Masters and not paying new grads, not paying for hour sessions — so many cuts in the past year alone (all of these). I’m pissed.

I feel like there should always be a balance though. If you’re charging $300 private pay, how many pro bono or sliding scale clients do you take? How do you serve the underserved in this position? I’m a grad student and want to make money for sure, but ethically, it’s also really important for me to make myself accessible, so I’m trying to figure out what that balance will look like for me
