I don't understand why people think that their culture is going to replicated in the US.

Wait, did the reports say the child was bullied for being Ghanian? I read he was bullied but I didn’t read the reason why. Can someone post the article?

Rho, that was our culture also. I am Black American. I remember being at church one day, cutting up, and some lady popped me in the back of my head and told me to pay attention. When I misbehaved, I had to deal with not only my mom, my grandma, and my great grandma. Sometimes my aunts. The one time I did disrespect my teacher, the principal gave me 3 days of ISS. my mom came up to the school and gave me a extra 2 days, and made me write scriptures out of the Bible. I was born in the 90's, ask me where the culture of "it takes a village" went, Idk. But I raise my son with those same values. He doesn't just answer to me. he has to answer to his village. And let me just say this, it's not a issue with Javits being from Africa, it's not a ethnic issue, it's a bullying issue. My son was bullied, I had to fight the administration just so he could switch schools because he wanted to kill himself. It's a problem with bullying and it starts at home. Parents need to start holding their kids accountable. This is not a time for the blame game, on FBA's or Africans or Dominicans. Cause one doesnt speak for us all. This is a time for us to stand as one (cause that's how they see us) and direct our attention to the actual problem. RIP JAVITS, may you get the justice you deserve 🙏🏾 Sending my deepest condolences to his parents, you all are in my prayers.

People from back home deeply romanticize America out of pure imagery. It’s so unfortunate and we need to have conversations with our people wherever we are from.

I had the same thoughts. I actually thought that now that Africans are trending or "cool" the African Booty Scratcher bullying was a thing of the past. To learn that the kids are still enduring this broke me.

You put this beautifully! Such a powerful take. Thank you for your voice sister. The story about this young baby ruined my day. I’m Nigerian and I saw my uncle and father in that boy’s dad! Please make this downloadable. I hate that this happened but it is sparking an important conversation that MUST be had across the diaspora!

I was born and raised in the U S, grew with the same values as you all did in Ghana, and was bullied everyday where I grew up. Parents and kids have definitely changed. (There seems to be no regard for life these days. Sign of the times) My condolences to the family. 🙏🏽

Girl... as a fellow Ghanaian who grew up in New York, this hits so close to home. My dad sent us away to an out-of-state boarding school mostly white because of a situation just like this. We were being bullied in school, mostly verbal for me, but my younger sister was targeted and physically hurt so badly she was almost blinded. My was like, "we have to figure this out," and sent us away primarily for our safety first, and education second. Seeing news like this shooting brings all those memories right back. so heartbreaking
