Garbage when it is inside the home and in a bag, but loose garbage on the street is trash. All trash is garbage, but not all garbage is trash.

from Alberta: take out the garbage. garbage goes in the garbage can. it's garbage day. put the garbage in a garbage bag and put it in the garbage can! I never hear anyone say trash, only for non-garbage items (trash tv, trashy outfit, trash panda) lol
