As the sun sets on Motzei Shabbos, witness King David strumming his harp and joyfully singing
As the sun sets on Motzei Shabbos, witness King David strumming his harp and joyfully singing "דוד מלך ישראל חי חי וקיים" (David, King of Israel, lives and endures!), while Eliyahu Hanavi and our spirited character whirl in ecstatic Jewish wedding dances—symbolizing the ultimate joy of redemption and unity. These figures hold profound significance at Motzei Shabbos (the end of Shabbat). Eliyahu Hanavi is the herald of the Messiah, announcing the era of geulah (redemption) as foretold in the Talmud (Eruvin 43b), where it's taught that the Messiah cannot arrive on Shabbat itself—hence our hopeful songs like "Eliyahu Hanavi" after Havdalah, longing for his swift coming in the new week to resolve conflicts and restore hearts (Malachi 3:23-24). Meanwhile, King David embodies eternal kingship and Messianic hope; the Melaveh Malkah meal honors him, as the Talmud (Shabbat 30a) recounts how David, knowing he would die on a Shabbat, celebrated each Motzei Shabbos with gratitude for another day of life—reminding us to extend Shabbos's holiness into the mundane. As Rambam (Maimonides) articulates in his Perush Hamishnayos on Sanhedrin 10:1, the 12th principle of faith: Hebrew: ומכלל יסוד זה שאין מלך לישראל אלא מבית דוד ומזרע שלמה בלבד וכל החולק על המשפחה הזאת כפר בשם הש"י ובדברי נביאיו. English: "And included in this principle is that there should not be a king in Israel except from the House of David and from the seed of Solomon exclusively. Anyone who contests this family denies God and the words of His Prophets." May this vision ignite our anticipation for Mashiach—bimhera v'yameinu (speedily in our days)! #MotzeiShabbat #EliyahuHanavi , #ShavuaTov, #gutvoch, #KingDavid
