You probably didn’t know that the food you’re consuming everyday is accelerating your risk for chronic disease and early death. Big food companies would prefer to keep it that way. As we explore with Dr. Marion Nestle in Episode 5 of the Mighty Pursuit Podcast, over 70% of the American diet is ultra-processed foods, which is a term that essentially means you’re not even eating real food anymore. Stripped of any nutrients, and loaded with harmful chemicals, ultra-processed food surrounds us EVERYWHERE. The food industry is following in the footsteps of the cigarette industry, rolling out the very same playbook. Get as rich as possible while killing and causing disease in as many people as possible. They win, we lose. Since the 1960s, chronic disease has SKYROCKETED. It would be unusual if you, the person reading this right now, does not know someone who has cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart disease and/or digestive disorders. Food industry executives live under the facade that because people love to eat ultra processed foods (duh, they’re made to be addictive), they’re doing a good thing for our society. Yet this was also the SAME reason that cigarette companies once used years ago. Like ultra-processed food, cigarettes were made to be addictive. They give you a dopamine rush, so of course consumers “enjoy” them, just as someone who is addicted to crack also “enjoys” getting high. Dr. Nestle has been the leading scientist in the fields of food studies and food politics for the last 50 years. She’s written dozens of books, been featured in multiple Netflix documentaries over the last year and has given talks at the Nobel Prize, Google and the New York Times. At 87-years-old, she has been fighting the corruption in the food industry for longer than many of us have lived. So if anyone is qualified to speak the truth here, it is Dr. Nestle.
