It’s not an okay thing to do- but this is the internet. Almost anything you’ve uploaded on the internet and if it is downloadable can be used however that person wants to use it. I’m sure since the start of ai people have downloaded fics and fed them into ai (whether a checker or for thier own benefit). If ai scrapping was a concern then keep your fic in a physical notebook. If people stealing your work is a concern- keep it in a physical notebook and don’t share it to a soul. It’s INCREDIBLY unfortunate, but in this day and age- that’s what you signed up for when you decide to upload/share any piece of creative work.

They were mostly already on Google drives before the arcive went down. I get what you are saying. I lock my fics down but I am also aware that my locked fics have been run through ai multiple times by scammers. If people want to share my fic that they went out of their way to download I am OK with that. I am also now posting my fics, still locked, to squidgeworld. There is a nuanced take to this but it also at the end of the day boils down to plagiarism is bad but distribution is fine.

So when you put a bunch of fanfiction into a Google Drive and start passing it around on social media, that gets uncomfortably close to being “mass distribution” which is against ao3’s TOS.

hate to tell you this but like 90% of writers I know write their fics on Google docs and then run it through a separate grammar checking system. That shit has already been double scraped 😅

it only does if you allow it or directly feed it Into it. this is done because while A03 is a archive, it goes down, so it's better to also make it own personal archive

Their browser extensions will allow you mass download from AO3. The Archive has been scraped multiple times. I don’t think it’s ethical if an author specifically says they don’t want it shared. I also don’t know that I would focus a lot of energy on this. If you’re adamant that you don’t want any reality where AI could touch your work. You probably need to hand write it and only share it in person.

A03 should come out with the option not to allow people to download your work as well as an option not to allow people to copy said work. Sadly, writers cannot trust the readers not to steal their work.

people are taking fics from ao3 and uploading them into ai anyways, its almost impossible to protect from and theyve already hit most of the popular fandoms, its actually so depressing & genuinely discouraging fanfic authors from writing at all if their work is just gonna be stolen anyways
