WHAT HAPPENED Imagine preparing for your wedding, one of the happiest days of your life, only to realise that you barely have enough relatives and friends to fill two or three tables. That is the heartbreaking situation that faced 24-year-old Xu Chenghong, popularly known online as Xiaoxiao Xu, from Yunnan Province in southwestern China. His childhood was marked by tragedy. When Xu was just three years old, his father died from an illness. Two years later, when he was five, his mother remarried, leaving him and his older brother behind. The boys were subsequently raised by their grandmother, who became their only dependable parental figure. But tragedy struck again. When Xu was approximately seven, his grandmother also died from illness. Suddenly, two young boys who had already lost their parents were left without the person who had been looking after them. Xu and his older brother had to depend on relatives as they grew up. Life was difficult, and Xu eventually dropped out of junior secondary school to start working. He travelled to different places, taking casual jobs and doing manual labour to survive. He had no wealthy parents to support him, no powerful family connections and no guaranteed future. He simply kept working and hoped for a better life. Then something beautiful happened. Xu fell in love. He met a young woman known online as Chuichui, and their friendship gradually developed into a serious romantic relationship. They had been together for approximately three years. She knew about his painful childhood and the difficult circumstances surrounding his family. Yet she chose to build a future with him. For a young man who had experienced so much loss, finding someone willing to share his life meant everything. He worked hard, saved money and prepared to marry the woman he loved. Eventually, October 31, 2026, was set for their wedding. But as the big day approached, Xu faced an unexpected problem. Who would attend his wedding? His family was extremely small. His parents were gone, his grandmother was gone, and his circle of relatives and close friends was limited. He estimated that even if he invited everyone he knew, they might only fill two or three tables. He wanted his bride to experience a beautiful wedding. He wanted a lively reception and people surrounding them, celebrating their new beginning. Then he came up with an extraordinary idea. He turned to social media and invited strangers from across China to attend his wedding. He wasn't asking them for money. He wasn't asking them to finance his marriage or buy him expensive presents. He simply wanted people to come, share a meal and celebrate with them. Perhaps ten or twenty kind-hearted people would respond, he thought. He could never have imagined what was about to happen. His invitation began spreading across Chinese social media. People started sharing it, commenting and promising to attend. Some offered to travel hundreds of kilometres.
