@racelegend12: John Henry "If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven, and bring you home again." ~ poem on John Henry's gravesite. "John Henry, A Lasting Legend." ~ Engraved on his statue He was honored with the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year on two occasions, specifically in 1981 and 1984. The 1981 award is particularly significant as it marks the only instance in which the recipient garnered every vote cast for that accolade. Additionally, John Henry holds the distinction of being the oldest horse to receive the Eclipse HOY Award, achieving this at the age of nine. Throughout his racing career, he participated in 83 races, securing 39 victories, 15 second-place finishes, and 9 third-place finishes. He also set a record for the most graded stakes wins among Thoroughbreds. Notably, after each victory, John Henry would often turn towards the tote board, seemingly to check the race time or perhaps the payout. Photo: John Henry and his groom Jose Mercado
