How does it feel to dislocate your kneecap? It’s a pain I genuinely wouldn’t wish on anyone. The second it happens, everything stops. You can’t breathe properly, you can’t think straight, you can’t move your leg, and even the slightest touch feels unbearable. You’re completely overwhelmed by pain and shock, and all you can focus on is getting through the next second. Your whole body is shaking, you’re terrified to move, and you have no idea what to do. They put your kneecap back into place, and people think that’s it. They think once it’s back in, the pain is over. But it’s not. Not even close. The pain afterwards, the swelling, the throbbing, the inability to walk normally, the constant fear of it happening again. The physio, the appointments, the scans, the sleepless nights and eventually facing surgery. And then comes the part nobody warns you about: the mental battle. The frustration of watching everyone else carry on with their lives while yours feels like it’s been put on hold. Missing out on the things you love, feeling isolated, losing motivation, constantly worrying about your knee and struggling with your mental health. The depression that can creep in when an injury takes away so much of your independence and happiness. People see a kneecap pop out and go back in. They don’t see the months of pain, the tears, the setbacks, the mental exhaustion or how much of your life it can take away. Putting it back in is one moment. Recovering from it is a whole different battle.
