🚨Jamie Carragher on Lisandro Martínez’s controversial penalty and second yellow card against Chelsea: 🗣️ Jamie Carragher: “I’m struggling to unsee what I’ve just watched. I’ve replayed that incident twice, paused it, zoomed in and out, trying to understand what Martínez was thinking. Honestly, the whole sequence is difficult to defend. “People will argue about whether the second yellow card was harsh, but I think we’re missing something important. Go back a few seconds before the penalty, to his challenge on Morgan Rogers. “He initially tries to pull Rogers down and fails. Rogers gets to the ball, and instead of recovering his position, Martínez goes for his leg. It’s a reckless challenge, he gets booked and gives away a free kick. “Now look at what happens next. That free kick leads to a corner. Chelsea put the ball into the box, and Martínez, who should be concentrating on defending, takes his eyes off the ball and focuses on Fofana. He loses track of the actual danger, gets caught in the wrong position and gives the referee another decision to make. “This is a Manchester United defender. His job is to defend, read danger and make sensible decisions. You cannot switch off in your own penalty area, particularly when you’re already on a yellow card. “What makes this even more frustrating is that a few weeks ago, Martínez was among the first players to speak publicly about the club’s recruitment and standards after United struggled to contain Solanke. He was right to demand higher standards, but surely those standards must apply to him as well. “Today, he gives away a penalty, receives a second yellow and leaves his teammates with ten men when they’re already chasing a two-goal deficit. That’s an enormous way to let your team down. “He goes away on international duty, puts on the Argentina shirt and looks like a completely different defender. Then he returns to Manchester United, and we’re watching another performance that puts the entire team under pressure. The inconsistency is becoming a serious concern. “I don’t understand how an experienced defender continues to make these kinds of decisions. Being aggressive is one thing; being reckless is another. You have to know when to make a challenge, when to stay on your feet and when to simply protect your position. “Manchester United cannot keep making excuses for individual performances. The club needs defenders who can be trusted in the biggest moments, not players who turn difficult situations into even bigger problems. “For me, the club has to seriously consider moving Martínez on. You cannot demand better recruitment, higher standards and accountability from everyone else while repeatedly failing to deliver those same standards yourself.
